Thank you for your interest in field experience at the Northeast Health District!

NOTICE TO STUDENTS SEEKING SHADOWING: To protect patient privacy, and make use of limited space in exam rooms, we DO NOT allow “volunteers” or “shadowing” students in exam rooms. Only approved nursing students, completing¬†official clinical hours are allowed to be in exam rooms. Therefore we are not able to provide shadowing or clinical contact hours.

We ask that all prospective students complete our form, so that we will better be able to place you during your internship/practicum at the Northeast Health District. It also allows us to have a better means for tracking prospective students.

Please start this process several weeks (several months would be best) in advance of your desired start date.


Important Notices for Nursing-related students:
  1. We currently can not accept medical assistant students, due to staffing.
  2. Our agency must have an existing contract with the school before consideration. If you are unsure whether we have an agreement in place, please inquire to determine if we have a contract with your school before completing the application. Contact Pam Smith at for further information.

Submit Your Application

Please complete the internship request form located HERE.

Once you complete the form and submit it, you will receive an email indicating that your application was received and is being reviewed. Please allow several days to a week to receive any follow-up communication.

Please note: If you submit a form, and do not receive an acknowledgement from someone within a week, please email, as the state email system often blocks emails as possible spam. (Hint: Gmail accounts are less likely to be blocked than hotmail, yahoo or UGA accounts.)

After Your Form is Submitted

Once a form is received, it will be reviewed and based on your area(s) of interest, the form will be forwarded to the appropriate staff member(s).

If there are no opportunities in the area(s) you indicated, but your information shows availability or experience in another area, your form may be given to other staff members for review. For example, you indicated an interest in adolescent health, but there were no openings within that program, so your information may also be passed to the Emergency Preparedness office for possible openings.

Remember, not everyone that submits a form can be accepted–our resources are limited, and project availability often varies from semester to semester.

Please note: Summer semester is often heavily requested, but it is also when we are least likely to be able to utilize interns, especially regarding programs that work with the schools and teens.

Important Things to Consider

  • Your Availability: some programs prefer interns/practica for specific times of day or days per week. You should also take into account any jobs or other activities you are involved in. Generally, most of our positions would be based on buildings that are open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm with some differences based on program or location.
  • Your Flexibility: In general, the more open you are to working with various programs, the greater the likelihood we can accommodate your experience.
  • Staff Availability: Program staff are often involved in multiple programs and projects at any given time. Please remember that they may or may not be able to take on a student at the time you are ready to begin your field experience.
    • Some programs prefer short-term projects (such as undergraduate practicum students), while others prefer undergraduate interns for long-term projects.
    • Some staff members will take MPH students, but many others will not.
    • We usually will not place a student with a new employee until that employee has been here for at least 6 months or longer.
  • Semester: In general, fall and spring semesters are best–we are less likely to have projects for students during summer semester.
  • Staff Changes: Note that your acceptance is usually based on a specific staff member agreeing to be your supervisor. If that staff member leaves or changes positions, we will try to find an alternative but there is a possibility that we may have to postpone or retract our agreement to be your field placement location.
